C’mon in, it’s open!

This weekend has been subconsciously dubbed Nationwide Open House Weekend by the National Association of Realtors. And you know what that means! 

That’s right– 49 degrees and rain…

Acutally, the weekend forecast doesn’t look all that bad, with even a threat of sun for Sunday. Catchy…

But rain or shine, we Realtors will be out tying balloons to our sandwich boards and arranging the cookies just so. Basically grinning & gripping from 11-4pm both days, doing everything short of windows “to sell this house today”  just like Annette Bening in American Beauty. 

Ah, if it were only so glamorous. My weekend won’t be spent schmoozing by the pool, or nibbling biscotti while admiring my listing’s commanding view of the Bay. Instead, I’ll be slogging it out down in the trenches in two manufactured homes with combined 800 days on the market.

Still, I think both these listings have a good chance of selling this weekend, and I’ll tell you why.

This lavishly updated 1990s built manufactured home in Sandy Point Heights walks the line between exceedingly well-maintained and dangerously over-improved. While not quite like painting the 1972 Vega with 14-carrot goldflake lacquer, there probably is a point beyond which one’s return on remodel investment is diminished in a home of this style.

Still, there is always something to be said for being the nicest home in any neighborhood, and the owners of this property have completed every project with style and great skill. Hundreds of square feet of artisan ceramic tile, complete with ornamental medallions of compasses (astrologically correct, naturally…). Stunning cook’s kitchen featuring custom oak cabinetry, stainless appliances and marble (not granite– marble!) counters. Hand-stacked stone hearth and high-end airtight stove. Three covered synthetic decks. Five hundred square foot detached shop w/ power & heat. New roof, windows, doors, skylights, lighting fixtures, appliances, furnace and water heater. It’s literally so much better than new it’s not even funny. 

Amazingly, the raddest feature of this home is not any of the physical world upgrades the sellers have done, but instead it’s the view. Sandy Point Heights isn’t that spotty smattering of trailers south of Slater Road on the Lummi Indian Reservation. Rather, it is that quiet and kept pocket of mostly newer manufactured homes south of Slater Road on the Lummi Indian Reservation, resting on the bluff above Sandy Point proper, home of million-dollar no-bank waterfront properties and the Sandy Point Country Club. It’s a mellow neighborhood, woven with gently sloped & wooded lanes named after Islands in the San Juan archipelago. And it’s got a dynamite view looking south and east down the Strait of Georgia toward Mt. Baker and Bellingham.

Take the Slater Road exit off I5 and blaze a trail of glory east past the Casino to Lake Terrel Road. Go left and drop down almost to the water, turning into Sandy Point Heights on your right
